NLCLUB's Books at Breakfast is a unique bookclub where books of Dutch authors are discussed . The authors are invited to join the conversation and dive into the book from their own perspective.
If someone ever asked you: "Wat ga je doen vanavond?" and your response was: "Lekker Niksen!" then you'll absolutely enjoy this book and this special Books at Breakfast gathering with the authors, Maartje Willems and Lona Aalders. They will dive into the genius, dutch concept of niksen and why we Dutch should teach it to our friends. If you have never heard of the phrase "Lekker Niksen!" before then make sure to clear your morning on May 2nd. Grab a cup of tea, Zoom in, and enjoy, while the authors elaborate on the concept.
The Lost Art of Doing Nothing
Sometimes, the best thing we can do for ourselves is nothing. The Dutch have a word for this form of active rest" niksen (which translates closely to "doing nothing"). This Dutch practice is a state of non-productivity - staring out of a window, lying on the grass, closing your eyes, or listening to music - that can help decrease stress, improve health, inspire creativity, and more. But it's harder than you think, and by no means a holy grail. In this fast-paced world our brains are not easily switched off.
"The best thing about niksen is the absence of a goal. It doesn't serve a purpose, but it's wonderful."
